In September Cool Choices partnered with various local entities in Waukesha County, Wisconsin on a community scale sustainability program. That program is now complete – ending on November 10, 2017. Below are highlights from the data participants shared with us via our game-based platform. We are excited to report on this data and the achievements of the program, which make it a true success for Waukesha County businesses and residents.

Cool Choices & Our Waukesha County Partners

Cool Choices partnered with four local chambers of commerce, two workforce development agencies, and a local marketing firm in Waukesha County. These entities helped us recruit more than 30 local businesses and community organizations into the program. Our local partners then encouraged their employees and constituents to sign up and play Cool Choices, competing against others across the county.

And compete they did! More than 500 people actively participated, which means these individuals took action to save energy, gasoline, or water or to reduce landfill waste. Participants then earned points for logging those actions in our online platform.

In addition to offering points for simple actions like turning off lights when not in use, Cool Choices promoted opportunities available through Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency program. Almost half of the participants signed up to get a free energy-saving kit from Focus on Energy.

One participant noted “Without Cool Choices, I wouldn’t have known about the free energy-efficient products that I could order from Focus on Energy.  My package arrived yesterday and I love the energy saving power strip and free bulbs.”

Cool Choices Program Results in Waukesha County

Overall participants logged more than 31,000 actions. If participants continue doing those actions, the annual savings will be $225,000.

Participants also identified almost 1,600 ideas for saving resources at work and across their communities. We’ll be sharing those ideas back with our community and business partners. We’re also providing each participating business with data on the actions taken by their employees.

The initial competition is over, but we’re confident that the residents and businesses of Waukesha County will continue making cool choices well into the future.
