To highlight the cool things our alums do after taking part in the Cool Choices online sustainability game, we love to share stories from past participants. Our alumni always impress us by taking sustainable practices to the next level. This month we were inspired by Abby’s sustainability story of foraging.

Thank you for sharing your story and ideas, Abby!

Why Forage for Food?

If you forage for food, you have the opportunity to get outside, learn about nature, and try new foods. From herbs to mushrooms, asparagus, and berries, wild plants provide an abundance of food that goes unnoticed by most. Take advantage of the wild edible plants in your region and give foraging a try! Below is a list of foraging tips & resources:

Spring Foraging Podcast

Listen as Wisconsin Public Radio’s Joy Cardin and plant expert Sam Thayer as they discuss how to forage in Wisconsin. Learn everything from what to look for and where to find it – even in your own backyard!

Take a Foraging Class

Whether you want a little guidance on your first foraging trip or you’re an old pro looking to learn something new, try taking a professionally-led foraging class. You’ll learn more in-depth information on techniques and get the chance to spend time with a group of fellow foragers.

Make a Foraging Calendar

As you begin to harvest wild food, write down what items you find, where you found them on this printable foraging calendar. As you continue to gather found foods you’ll also collect knowledge about when and where is the best time to forage in your area. After a while, you’ll have your own personalized foraging resource!
